Thanks to a generous grant from the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District (www.cuyahogarecycles.org), Fairmount Presbyterian Church is making exciting improvements to strengthen our recycling efforts, care for God’s Creation, and set a healthy example in our community.

We now have two water bottle filling stations—one in the back of the sanctuary and a new one in the chapel hallway, which was funded by this grant. Additionally, this generous grant also funded the purchase of aluminum water bottles. Pick up a free aluminum bottle in Andersen Hall. Bring your reusable bottle to worship, meetings, and events. These additions will help reduce bottled water purchase costs and cut plastic waste.

You’ll also notice new trash and recycling bins, courtesy of this grant, in Andersen Hall, the Ganson Room, the Choir Hallway, the second level, and the kitchen. Our goal is to reduce the number of landfill bags we throw out each week by recycling more effectively. Cleveland Heights mixed recycling includes paper, flattened cardboard, pop cans, plastic water bottles, and glass bottles. Trash items currently include uneaten food, plastic clamshell containers, plastic utensils and plates, and wide-rim plastic cups. We’ll be tracking our weekly landfill bag totals and working together to bring those numbers down.

Be sure to check out our new special item recycling cart in the office. Thanks to the research of Fairmount member Joanne Westin, we now have collection options for used eyeglasses, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, unused greeting cards, old CDs and DVDs, batteries, empty pill bottles, airplane earbuds, computer cables, empty printer ink cartridges, holiday lights, extension cords, and computer-related items.

Thank you for helping Fairmount become a more sustainable, thoughtful, and faithful steward of God’s Earth—one small action at a time!
