Philip Yancey writes, “I have a hunch… that Frederick Buechner has become the most quoted living writer among Christians of influence.” Ann Lamott considers Buechner to be America’s most important living theologian, “a brilliant, lovely religious thinker with a great sense of humor, and a first class writer.” A master memoirist, novelist, popular theologian, and preacher, Buechner is the only ordained minister nominated for both the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize for fiction. In his career that spans six decades he has authored 40 books that tell the truth about the emptiness and despair of modern life without God, but then go deeper into mining the subterranean presence of grace that transforms individuals with feet of clay into livegiving saints. In this four week course we will trace Buechner’s incongruous journey of faith and the theological riches he offers to us, his readers. We will also answer the questions “why should I read Buechner?” and “where do I start?”
