DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays in Lent – Rise Up: The Power of the Beloved Community  \nThroughout Lent\, Fairmounters will gather with members of Shiloh Baptist Church\, Christ Episcopal Church\, St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church\, and First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland for worship\, prayer\, and fellowship. We’ll kick it off with our Mardi Gras celebration at Fairmount and a joint Ash Wednesday service at Christ Episcopal. Then\, each of the following Wednesdays in Lent beginning February 25th\, we will gather from 6:30pm-8:00pm\, each week at a different church. \n The first half of our gatherings will be worship\, teaching\, and prayer–centered on biblical texts that speak to the power of God’s people to build the Beloved Community\, even when the “powers that be” have other ideas. During the second half of the evening\, we’ll sit at tables with people from our different congregations to enjoy a meal and fellowship. Maureen Howell is a native of Virginia\, currently serving as Organist at First Baptist Church in Raleigh\, North Carolina. Her composition “Reflection on KINGSFOLD” was the First Place Winner in the Short Compositions for Worship Services category of The American Guild of Organists 2025 Woman Composer Sunday Organ Composition Competition. \nJesse Montgomery (b 1981) “is a GRAMMY® Award-winning composer\, violinist\, and educator whose work interweaves classical music with elements of vernacular music\, improvisation\, poetry\, and social consciousness\, making her an acute interpreter of 21st-century American sound and experience. She was named Performance Today’s 2025 Classical Woman of the Year. The closing hymn is both a text and a tune by women. Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1915) wrote more than 8\,000 hymns and gospel music. She was known for her teaching and mission work. Phoebe Palmer Knapp (1839-1908) was an American composer and organist who composed over 500 hymn tunes. \nWe gratefully acknowledge the Eleanor R. Baird Music Fund\, which makes today’s anthem possible. \nNext Sunday\, March 8th (turn your clocks ahead one hour)\, the Lake Forest College Choir from Chicago will be singing during the 11:00 a.m. service under the direction of Anne Barry. Lake Forest will join with the Fairmount Choir for a combined anthem. \nRush Hour Concert\, Tuesday\, March 17 at 5:30 p.m. with Andrea Walker and Mikhail Grazhdanov in a program entitled\, “The Bachs & Mendelssohns: Family Matters.” This series is made possible by Peter and Sabrina Vanden Broeck as well as contributions from the congregation at Fairmount. Give your mind\, body\, and soul a 50-minute rest and be renewed for the remainder of the week.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays in Lent – Rise Up: The Power of the Beloved Community  \nThroughout Lent\, Fairmounters will gather with members of Shiloh Baptist Church\, Christ Episcopal Church\, St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church\, and First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland for worship\, prayer\, and fellowship. We’ll kick it off with our Mardi Gras celebration at Fairmount and a joint Ash Wednesday service at Christ Episcopal. Then\, each of the following Wednesdays in Lent beginning February 25th\, we will gather from 6:30pm-8:00pm\, each week at a different church. \n The first half of our gatherings will be worship\, teaching\, and prayer–centered on biblical texts that speak to the power of God’s people to build the Beloved Community\, even when the “powers that be” have other ideas. During the second half of the evening\, we’ll sit at tables with people from our different congregations to enjoy a meal and fellowship. DESCRIPTION:“A Time to Break Silence” – Christian Discipleship and Social Movements \nYou are invited to a weekly series of discussions based on some key documents of the modern Christian church. The six-part series runs through Sunday\, February 22nd. The discussions will focus on Christian discipleship in a variety of contexts around the globe. This coming Sunday\, January 25th\, we will focus on the Barmen Declaration of 1934. Sunday\, February 1st will focus on the Confession of 1967. Over the course of this series we will look at\, the Medellin Conference statement of 1968\, the Belhar Confession (1982)\, and finally\, Dr. King’s address A Time to Break Silence of April\, 1967. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday February 17th for a Mardi Gras Celebration for all ages! We hope you can join us beginning at 5:30 pm for the Rush Hour concert in Andersen Hall. Dinner will start being served at 6:15 p.m.\, and will include mac & cheese\, ham\, donuts\, and your potluck favorites! Please drop off a contribution to add to the feast in room 114 when you arrive. We will continue the night with wonderful music\, crafts\, food\, and best of all\, fellowship. This will be our kick-off for the Lenten season in which we are partnering with Christ Episcopal\, First Baptist\, Shiloh Baptist\, and St. Mark’s Presbyterian for fellowship\, study\, and more. DESCRIPTION:Every Sunday\, join us for worship in the sanctuary and online at 11:00 a.m. \nFPC Website: https://fpccle.org/online-worship/\nFPC YouTube: https://youtube.com/@fpccle \nSunday\, February 15th Music \nMusic Notes: Today kicks off a series of events marking the 30th anniversary of the installation of the magnificent Schantz Pipe Organ (1996-2026). John Cook’s (1918-1984) “Fanfare”\, published in 1952\, was his only organ piece to achieve popular success. Cook was disgruntled at the claim he had composed it in one afternoon while he had spent significant time on his other organ compositions. Inspired by Psalm 81\, the first theme is stated on the solo trumpet. The second theme is stated 13 measures later with trumpet fanfares interspersed throughout. The middle section in a minor uses the lighter sounds of the organ and is a dialogue between the front and back organs. The coda consists of a dialogue between rhythmic and melodic material from both sections ending festively with the full organ. \nMarkus Williams (1972-2018) was a composer\, arranger\, music director\, vocalist\, and educator. He was the creator and founding Artistic Director of The Human Symphony Foundation. Adolphus Hailstork (b 1941) is an American composer and educator of African American\, Native American\, and European ancestry.  Educated at the Manhattan School of Music\, he was Professor of Music at Youngstown State University from 1971-1976. “Oh\, Freedom” became affiliated with civil rights activism when it was used at protests of the 1906 Atlanta race massacre and later during the Civil Rights Movement. \nIntroducing our Spirituals Practice  \nThe Spirituals Project \nToday Fairmount is launching a social justice initiative of reparations to our enslaved siblings. Historically\, Negro Spirituals were orally passed through the generations. Since that time countless composers/arrangers have taken these pieces to create their own arrangements which have been sold to churches\, schools\, and community organizations. These arrangers receive royalties from every copy of music sold. Since there were no copyrights on these original spirituals\, the arrangers collect the royalties in full. \nThe Spirituals Project aims to increase awareness about this music that is an important part of our American heritage. We will collect funds each quarter as a reparation\, and will share those funds to local organizations supporting black musicians. \nFor the first quarter (January-March)\, funds collected will go to the A. Grace Lee Mims Fund held within the Cleveland Foundation which supports graduate students pursuing a degree in voice with a concentration on preserving the Negro Spiritual. A. Grace Lee Mims served as soprano soloist at Fairmount for twenty years and hosted the program “Black Arts” for forty-three years on WCLV. Frederick Taylor\, Music Director at Shiloh Baptist\, was one of A. Grace Mims’ voice students\, and the current section leader at Shiloh\, Matthew Jones\, was a scholarship recipient in 2021. \nIf you are interested in participating in this project\, you may donate online.
